Timkat, known in Ge’ez as ጥምቀት (T’imk’et), is a vibrant celebration observed by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church to mark Epiphany. Each year, it takes place on January 19 (or January 20 in leap years), which corresponds to the 11th of Terr in the Ge’ez calendar.
This joyful occasion commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. One of the most exciting parts of Timkat is its ceremonial reenactment of baptism, much like what many Christians experience when they visit the Holy Land.
During the festivities, a key element is the Tabot—a representation of the Ark of the Covenant—adorned in rich fabrics and carried on the head of a priest in a colorful procession. The Tabot is usually kept hidden from the public eye, but it symbolizes the moment when Jesus was revealed as the Messiah during his baptism in the Jordan.

The Divine Liturgy is celebrated early in the morning, around 2 a.m., near a stream or pool. As dawn breaks, the surrounding water is blessed and sprinkled on the participants. Many individuals even dive into the water to renew their baptismal vows. But that’s just the beginning!
As noon approaches on Timkat Day, a large crowd gathers at the ritual site, including those who took a quick nap and returned. The holy ark is joyfully escorted back to its church amid a lively procession filled with color and celebration. Clergy members in bright robes and carrying umbrellas lead hymns, while elders march solemnly, accompanied by middle-aged men singing heartfelt, low-pitched hymns. The children add to the lively atmosphere with their playful antics.
Women dress in their finest attire, chatting excitedly, enjoying a rare day of freedom, while spirited young men leap and dance to rhythmic songs. This lively festival is even recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage! Once the holy ark has safely returned to its home, everyone heads back to enjoy a festive feast together. Timkat truly stands out as one of the most significant holidays—if not the greatest—of the year!
