Queen Nandi KaBhebhe, a truly remarkable and resilient woman, left an indelible mark on history as the mother of Shaka kaSenzangakhona, King of the Zulus. Born as a daughter of Bhebhe, a respected Elangeni chief, Nandi’s life took a tumultuous turn when she became pregnant out of wedlock by Senzangakhona, the son of Jama. This unconventional union caused friction within the Mhlongo people, who demanded damages for the non-traditional act. Nandi, displaying immense strength and determination, personally led the negotiations, ultimately securing 55 head of cattle as compensation, thus averting a potential conflict.
Following the birth of her son Shaka, Nandi initially resided at Senzangakhona’s kraal. However, as her relationship with Senzangakhona deteriorated, she was compelled to leave, returning to her people, the Mhlongo of Elangeni, but leaving Shaka behind. The challenges she faced were immense, from protecting Shaka from famine, assassination attempts, and enemies to navigating the complexities of her own safety. Nandi’s resilience shone through as she sought refuge among different tribes, ultimately finding a welcoming community among the Mthethwa people under the leadership of chief Dingiswayo ka Mohlatsane.
It was among the Mthethwa that Nandi found a sense of stability and security for her family, raising her sons Shaka and Ngwadi, as well as her daughter Nomcoba. Her son, Shaka, flourished within the Mthethwa, honing his military prowess and devising innovative military tactics. Nandi’s journey was not without its hardships, as she endured challenges while living among the Ncholo and Qwabe people. Her resilience in the face of adversity and her unwavering dedication to the well-being and future of her children paint a vivid picture of a woman whose strength and love knew no bounds.
