Ewedo, also known as Prince Efabo, left an indelible mark as the fourth Oba of the Kingdom of Benin, reigning from 1255 AD to 1280 AD. His visionary leadership reshaped the kingdom in numerous ways, solidifying his legacy as one of the most wise and effective Obas of Benin.
One of his significant achievements was the relocation of the seat of government from Usama to the site of the present palace, a strategic move that enhanced the kingdom’s governance. Ewedo also brought forth crucial changes, including the introduction of new deities and laws. Notably, he renamed the country from Ile or Ile-Ibinu to Ubini, which eventually became known as Benin.
In addition to these reforms, Ewedo played a pivotal role in restructuring the political and administrative systems of the kingdom. His establishment of a palace bureaucracy contributed to more efficient governance, while his astute leadership led to the expansion of Benin’s territory and influence.
Ewedo’s influence extended to the realm of justice and governance as well. He implemented beneficial laws and even instituted a prison, named after himself, where offenders were held until 1897. His initiatives also encompassed the introduction of various prestigious titles, each with specific responsibilities attached, such as Uwangue, Esekhurhe, Osodin, and Uso. These titles served to bolster the traditional structures within the kingdom, ensuring the smooth functioning of various aspects of governance.
Moreover, Ewedo made lasting changes to the process of conferring titles within the kingdom. He decreed that only Oliha had the authority to crown the Oba of Benin, and barred himself and the other Uzama Nihinron from bestowing titles. Subsequently, the responsibility for conferring titles transitioned to the Iyase of Benin, who undertakes this duty on behalf of the Oba.
Ewedo’s reign marked a transformative period in the history of the Kingdom of Benin, and his legacy continues to be celebrated for his far-reaching reforms and contributions to the growth and prosperity of the kingdom.
