The Dabous Giraffes stand as a testament to the ancient artists who carved their majestic forms into the rugged surface of the Dabous Rock. What makes the Dabous Giraffes even more remarkable is their location – nestled on a sandstone outcrop in the Ténéré desert, amid the first foothills of the Aïr Mountains. This setting, about 110 km north of Agadez and only a few kilometers from the Trans-Saharan Highway, adds a sense of mystery and allure to these ancient carvings.
These magnificent petroglyphs are not only a sight to behold but also hold historical and archaeological significance. They are, in fact, the largest known animal petroglyphs in the world, a testament to the skill and artistry of their creators. The surrounding area further enriches this historical treasure, with 828 images found engraved on the rocks. Among these images, 704 depict various animals such as cattle, giraffes, ostriches, antelopes, lions, rhinoceros, and camels, painting a vivid picture of the rich wildlife that once thrived in this region. Additionally, 61 human figures and 17 inscriptions in Tifinâgh add layers of complexity and intrigue to this ancient site.
Dating back between 6,000 and 8,000 years ago, during the African humid period, these carvings offer a mesmerizing glimpse into a bygone era. At that time, the region experienced a more temperate climate, characterized by a less arid landscape and a Sahara teeming with life, resembling a vast savannah.
